Chicago Apartment Bedroom
A Calm, Contemporary Retreat Designed for a First Apartment in the City
This Chicago apartment was my daughter’s first home away from home—rented during her second year of college—and the project carried all the excitement and emotion that comes with helping a young adult settle into their own space. The goal was to create a bedroom that felt grown-up yet accessible, expressive without being overwhelming, and comfortable enough to be a true refuge in the middle of the city.
Deep charcoal walls introduce a sense of sophistication and intimacy, balanced by crisp white bedding, warm textures, and sculptural lighting. The abstract geode artwork—with its swirling blacks, grays, and golds—anchors the palette and brings a touch of youthful energy and modern glamour to the room.
Natural light from the oversized Chicago window softens the otherwise moody palette, while layered textiles, greenery, and simple accessories keep the space warm and livable. It’s a compact room, but with thoughtful choices and a focus on texture and contrast, it lives larger than its footprint.
The result is a stylish yet approachable bedroom—equal parts “first apartment” charm and elevated design—created to support a young person carving out independence in the city.
