Lilac Estate
Originally built in 1954 by an engineer with an unconventional vision, this Walnut Creek residence has been transformed over more than two decades into a highly personal retreat that reflects both the character of the original structure and the evolving design perspective of its owner, interior designer Ania Omski-Talwar.
What began as a fortress-like home defined by cinder-block walls and limited connection to the outdoors has gradually evolved into a warm, Mediterranean-inspired sanctuary designed for modern living and entertaining.
The most recent phase of the transformation focused on reimagining the backyard as a resort-style destination. A new 16-by-40-foot pool anchors the landscape, surrounded by dining terraces, lounge areas, an outdoor kitchen and bar, and a series of custom gathering spaces designed to encourage connection and year-round outdoor living. Carefully layered plantings, textured stucco walls, and thoughtfully composed sightlines create a sense of privacy while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
Throughout the project, custom finishes and handcrafted details played a central role. Warm-toned stucco treatments, tinted concrete surfaces, natural materials, and richly textured furnishings soften the property's original architectural framework, creating an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and relaxed. The resulting environment balances architectural structure with lush landscaping, transforming a once-isolated backyard into a destination for entertaining, cooking, gathering, and retreat.
The project stands as both a personal expression and a design laboratory—an ongoing exploration of craftsmanship, problem-solving, and outdoor living that continues to evolve alongside the home itself.
